What it does
This kit guides you through all stages of growing edible mushrooms at home: hydrate the substrate, inoculate with mycelium, let it colonise, then open and keep humid to trigger fruiting. A simple, educational and fun gateway into mycology.
In class — included resources (FR)
- “Mushroom life cycle” presentation – PDF
- Tick‑box observation sheets – PDF (daily tracking)
- Theory plan 10 × 15 min (types of mushrooms, substrates, etc.)
- Practical plan 3 × 45 min (prepare, inoculate, observe/harvest)
- Colouring pages for younger kids
- Suitable for ages 4–12
Why you’ll love it
- Hands‑on, playful, instructive activity for kids & adults
- Clear, visible steps with tangible results
- Short pace that sustains motivation
- Reliable support to discover hygiene, life cycles & scientific observation
Contents & composition
Straw pellets 750 g with 2% lime (non‑hydrated)
Mycelium 200 g (colonised grain)
Grow bag with filter patch
Illustrated instructions
Offered species:
Grey oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) – Blue oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus var. columbinus) – Pink oyster (Pleurotus djamor) – Elm oyster (Hypsizygus ulmarius) – Black Pearl (Pleurotus ostreatus × eryngii hybrid)
How to use
Prepare the area
Clean hands & surface. Work neatly.
Hydrate substrate — Pour 1.2 L warm water into the bag with straw + lime.
Soak 5 min.
Target 60–65% moisture.
Inoculate
Add 200 g mycelium. Close. Gently massage to distribute evenly.
Incubate
~20 °C, away from direct light, 2–3 weeks until white, even colonisation.
Open & humidify
Expel air; open 5–10 cm on the side. Maintain high humidity (spray 1–3×/day or use a plate + damp towel if you cannot spray).
Harvest
Oyster clusters appear 1–3 weeks after opening. Harvest just before caps flatten and turn up.
Specs & recommendations
- Use: indoors, room temperature (~20 °C)
- Yield: 1–3 flushes per kit depending on conditions
- Storage before use: up to 3 weeks in fridge (2–8 °C)
- Tips: careful hygiene; steady humidity after opening; avoid drafts & direct sun
- Audience: all ages 4+ with adult supervision
Safety & precautions
- Lime may irritate skin & mucosa. Avoid contact; don’t touch face. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water (eyes immediately).
- Grain spawn is not for consumption; only edible fruiting bodies, properly prepared & cooked, are to be eaten.
- Living product: results depend on your conditions (hygiene, temperature, humidity, airflow).

FAQ
Difference vs ready‑to‑fruit kit?
DIY includes pasteurisation & inoculation; then colonisation before fruiting. Ready‑to‑fruit arrives colonised and goes straight to fruiting.
Time to first harvest?
~3–5 weeks total (2–3 weeks colonisation, then 1–3 weeks after opening).
How many flushes?
1–3 depending on species & conditions; some kits have given up to 5.
How much water at start?
About 1.2 L; adjust if needed.
Suitable for schools?
Yes. Teacher pack (FR) includes materials for ages 4–12.
